THE FOUR MEDICI’S STATUES
Michelangelo Buonarroti began in 1520 a work at the Basilica of San Lorenzo, in Florence, in the Medici’s Chapels, built as a personal sepulcher of the Medici’s family. The tombs were decorated with figures that could be interpreted as allegories of the parts of the day: Night and Day, Dawn and Twilight
The models of these statues, besides expressing an intense plastic vitality, emanate a spiritual and emotional tension that allows us to glimpse the slow, almost painful stretching of the Dawn, the heavy folding on itself of the Night, the rising energy of the Day, the absorbed melancholy and heaviness of Twilight
Appealed by this SPIRITUAL and EMOTIONAL tension, I let myself be guided by “my feeling inside”, symbolically elaborating on these four canvases the Medici’s statues in a contemporary version
